At Colne Osteopathy a wide range of conditions and symptoms
can be treated
Neck and back pain.
General aches and pains in the neck and back can build up
from repeated movements or on going poor posture.
Frequently postural adaptations are made leading to over
loaded muscles and imbalanced joint which amongst other
things can lead to head aches.
Headaches
As
mentioned above overloaded muscle and joint can lead to
headaches which respond well to manual therapy. Headaches
can also caused by sinus problems and jaw problems.
Osteopathy applies a variety of gentle techniques including
breathing exercises that help alleviate headaches caused by
muscle and joint problems.
Neck
pain (cervical pain) Whiplash
Neck pain can arise from a variety of causes including
whiplash. Whiplash responds particularly well to an
osteopathic approach using gentle techniques that many
patients find profoundly relaxing. These functional/cranial
osteopathic techniques take years to master. Please note
whiplash affects far more than the neck (eg liver stomach
lower back and diaphragm).
Shoulder, arm, hand pain
Pain
in the shoulder either through a sudden onset or gradual
responds to an assessment of the shoulder girdle neck and
arm. These conditions include
frozen shoulder, golfer's elbow, tennis elbow. Frequently
pain in these areas is caused by an unnoticed build of of
tension that eventually effects tendon and then joints. The
tissues causing pain are treated directly AND the
surrounding tissues to allow the body to return to normal
function. Where patients are sports people technique and
posture are carefully assessed and coaches are worked with
wherever possible.
General Muscle, ligament and joint pain
Osteopathy
is applicable to the whole muscular skeletal system
including the symptoms of athritis. Temporary relief is
frequently provided using osteopathy. For those who suffer
from syndromes such as Fibromyalgia and chronic pain
conditions osteopathy can be a excellent treatment as part
of multidisciplinary chronic pain management.
Upper back pain
Frequently
associated with stress (with good reason due to nerve
supplies) and imbalances around the body. In the upper back
a lot of postural compensation occurs in the shoulders
leading to nagging pain. Careful postural assessment and
treatment of the whole body is applied.

Lower back pain (or back ache)
Back ache has a variety of potential causes, but symptoms
are frequently reduced and removed through osteopathic
manipulation. Occasionally when the cause is beyond the
scope of osteopathic treatment patients are referred on or
then treated with a multidisciplinary approach.
Disc problems and trapped nerves
When
a true prolapsed disc occurs it is very painful and
worrying to patients. Osteopathy can aid the recovery
process with exercises and manual treatment of associated
structures. Trapped nerves once identified can respond to
osteopathic treatment depending on the the area of nerve
compression and the tissues causing the symptoms. When
appropriate patients may be referred to other specialists.
Rib
injuries
Rid
injuries can be surprisingly painful and respond very well
to gentle osteopathic manipulation. Rib function is
enhanced through careful palpation and articulation. This
can be as appropriate to singers as athletes as well as
those who have suffered chronic chest infections.
Over
use and repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
Theses injuries include golfer's elbow tennis elbow and RSI
for office workers musicians. Manual therapy and self
exercise has proven very effective at treating these
conditions. Where necessary patients may be referred to
other specialists.
Pain
in pregnancy -can cause rib and lower back pain.
Especially
in the last third of pregnancy lower back pain can occur
and it is not uncommon for ribs to cause discomfort. The
gentle approach that osteopath use is particularly suited
to treating women during this time.
Hip pain, Leg pain, ilio tibial band (ITB) pain
Often
mistaken for sciatic pain the ITB pain or hip pain can be
due to muscle and postural imbalance that creeps up on
people unnoticed, then after a seemingly innocuous event
becomes problematic.
Sciatica
"Sciatica"
is an umbrella term which can be due to a number of
tissues, some of which are true sciatic pain some of which
are not. An osteopathic assessment will frequently
establish the cause of pain and treatment will resolve
it.
Postural
related problems
A patient may find that they have changed job or work
station and that they have developed nagging pains, in the
shoulder neck etc. As part of an osteopathic consultation
these factors are considered and appropriate advice and
treatment given.
Osteopathy
can also help with:
Knee pain, ankle and foot pain
Sports injuries
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Post surgery and post fracture treatment
Well being and relaxation
